Meridian Surpasses Nampa to Become Second Largest Idaho City

The Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho estimates that Meridian's 2014 population is 85,240 while Nampa's is 84,840,

Conventional wisdom has been that Nampa is Idaho's second-largest city, second only to Boise.

But new numbers indicate otherwise, bumping Meridian up to the No. 2 spot.

The issue surfaced in a column written in the Meridian Press by Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd, who had insisted that Meridian was Idaho's second-largest city. The Press said it had initially altered the mayor's reference but has since learned that de Weerd was right.

According to the Press, the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho estimates that Meridian's 2014 population is 85,240 while Nampa's is 84,840,

The last U.S. Census, taken in 2010, indicated that Nampa's population was 81,725 while Meridian's population was 75,100.
