With so much significant change to Downtown Boise's landscape, the new year is bringing much more conversation about downtown parking.
During a Jan. 12 workshop session, the Boise City Council is expected to discuss a proposal
that would suggest higher fares for some of the more desirable street parking spaces in the downtown core. One day earlier, the Capital City Development Corporation,
which owns and operates six downtown Boise parking garages, is expected to receive a comprehensive analysis of the city's parking supply and demand.
Michigan-based Carl Walker, Inc.
, which was commissioned to create the study, will update its findings from previous analyses in 2008 and 2014. The bottom line, according to the new study, shows Boise will face "dramatic growth in parking demand" for at least the next five years, and there is a "greater sense of urgency related to crafting a new strategic plan," including better utilization of existing parking, an examination of parking regulations and rates, and the possibility of new parking structures. The new study reflects an anticipated deficit of 458 parking spaces in 2017, compared to the 2014 finding of 864 surplus spaces.
In particular, the study points to the proposed hotel/condo development in the the area known as Parcel B
on a five-acre parcel west of JUMP. The study identifies a new demand of 350 parking spaces associated with The Gardner Company's proposed development. The study adds, "CCDC should consider adding as much public parking to this project as it can afford" and "many of the new parking spaces could be used during the daytime hours for public parking based on shared parking principles."
Meanwhile, CCDC is preparing to re-brand many of its parking facilities and, with the assistance of Oliver Russell, has chosen a new brand: ParkBOI.
