Dine Out for the Red Cross - 'Round the Town - Life's Kitchen Lunch - Klatsch Katch-Up


Eight nights. Eight restaurants. One challenge. September 24 through October 1, downtown restaurants competed against one other to raise money for the National Disaster Relief Fund and the Greater Idaho Red Cross. On each restaurant's designated night, diners pitched in with a $10 door entry donation, a healthy appetite and donation money in their pockets. Some events entertained donors with the tunes of local musicians Adam Gottesman, Kevin Kirk and Sally Tibbs, Rebecca Scott, $oul Purpo$e and New Orleans-based Saaraba. And a few eateries gave back to the givers with free appetizers, desserts and glasses of wine.

Event organizer Larissa Lamson is a private citizen who orchestrated the week of fundraising to benefit national nonprofits on a local level.

"This fundraiser was about the interconnection between national and community resources; we don't exist without each other," says Lamson. "We wanted to help the national disaster victims while supporting our local restaurants and helping to make sure that our Red Cross is here for us in Idaho in our times of need."

By week's end, $7,500 was raised by the event, with Mai Thai taking first place in the good-natured fundraising competition. Second place was taken by Reef, followed by Satchel's Grill in third.


In an effort to concentrate on delicious dinner, Richard's of Hyde Park has stopped serving lunch. Dinner will still be served seven nights a week starting at 5 p.m. Sunday brunch will still be available from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Friday, October 14, is the grand opening of Le Poulet Rouge's new bakery. It's rumored that you won't be able to get past the displays of cakes, pies, cookies and pastries without sampling a little something for yourself.

The Wishing Star Wine Tasting Extravaganza is Saturday, October 8, from 7-10 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn (7699 W. Spectrum Ave.), featuring a dessert auction, live music and wines from the Winery at Eagle Knoll, Carmela, Hegy's South Hill Winery, Parma Ridge and Silver Trail Vineyards. Proceeds benefit Wishing Star Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to area children with life-threatening illnesses. Tickets are $25 per person or $160 per table. People know that Life's Kitchen is Boise's food service on-the-job program for young adults ages 16-20. What you may not know is that Life's Kitchen serves lunch Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Stop in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to taste the fruits of the students' labor for less than $7 a dish. Each Tuesday, a new weekly menu is posted on the Web site and e-mailed to newsletter recipients. So here's the dish on Kulture Klatsch. Doors will be closed for another two or three weeks while the new owner(!) repairs some water damage and tweaks the menu just a bit. The name will change to Koffee Klatsch Bistro and Klatsch lovers can expect to see a few changes. New owner Jan House says that the menu will "move beyond pure vegetarian" but keep the concept of healthy and natural foods from local producers, farmers and hormone-free meat producers. While the daylight hours will still see plenty of smoothies, coffee and juice go over the counter, the evening atmosphere will move to a wine bar concept with an expanded wine selection and a selection of small shareable sample plates. But hold on Klatsch groupies ... don't go getting all atwitter about your favorite menu items disappearing from the lineup. House encourages Klatsch regulars to shout out for their favorite dish. If there's something you don't want to see disappear from the menu, leave a message at the Klatsch at 345-0452.
