Oh Balls (and Bats)

Hitting the field for summer sports

Now that outdoor recreation season has officially started, there's no better time to figure out how to do it right.

The Idaho Bocce Ball Club is there for those folks. The club is offering a set of free lessons for anyone interested in taking up the sport with ancient roots.

Lessons will be held on Wedneday, April 27 and Wednesday, May 4 beginning at 6 p.m. at the bocce ball courts at Ann Morrison Park. The lessons are open to all skill levels, and all equipment will be provided, so don't worry about not having the balls for the sport.

To preregister for the lessons, all Lou Piccotti (208-375-5228), Mike DeJulis (208-376-3171) or Judy Campbell (208-890-4178). For more info on the club, visit idahobocceballclub.com.

Speaking of balls, the Boise Hawks are getting geared up for the summer season with several events.

On Friday, April 29, the team will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition for kids. Participants will be divided into four age groups (7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14) and have the chance to show off their skills with the fundamentals of baseball. Those who excel can compete for the chance to win awards for individual pitching, hitting and running, as well as the all-around champion in each age group.

The competition will start at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium (5600 N. Glenwood St., Garden City) and participants need to have a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a waiver.

Fans of all ages can check out the free Fan Fest Celebration on Friday, May 6. The event--in collaboration with DrugFree Idaho--will include a kid's carnival, batting practice, bouncy houses, tours of firetrucks and emergency vehicles, $1 concessions and assorted educational booths.

Things will get going at 6 p.m., but those who hang out until 9:30 p.m. can take in a fireworks show.
