PIERCE IS VIBRATING WITH RAGE

When companies made it known that the city government of Pierce had stopped paying its bills, police and the FBI turned their eyes to Glenda Shedd, 55, the city's clerk and treasurer. Then they hit the jackpot--or, more accurately, they discovered that Shedd had been secretly hitting the jackpot for years. She was indicted last week in U.S. District Court in Coeur d'Alene on charges that she embezzled more than $148,000 in city funds between 2004 and last October, when she was fired.

According to Shedd's indictment, provided to BW by the U.S. Attorney's office, Shedd is suspected of using the city checkbook and credit card for 203 personal financial transactions. The offenses range in size from a $28 check to Shedd (one of 104 checks she allegedly wrote to herself, totaling more than $90,000) to a $3,970 check to the company Contours of Nature. (Incidentally, a Google search for the business "Contours of Nature" turned up not a single hit anywhere in the world. But another version of the same name, "Natural Contours," happens to be a very popular vibrator manufacturerw.)

If convicted, Shedd could face 10 years in prison for each of the 203 embezzlement charges.
