Queensryche with locals Midline, Sept. 27, Big Easy

Late last year, Queensryche produced Operation: Mindcrime II, the follow-up to their 1988 concept album, Operation Mindcrime. The rock opera centered around Nikki, a man bent on the destruction of those bent on the destruction of America. As concept albums go, it was pretty fierce. Their North American tour included performing both the 1988 and the 2006 albums in their entirety in lavishly produced shows. The last entry in the Mindcrime franchise was Mindcrime at the Moore, a performance in Seattle, the band's hometown, at the Moore Theater.

Late last month, Sign of the Times: The Best of Queensryche was released. Disc No. 1 has 17 tracks spanning the band's 20-plus year history which includes, of course, the song best known by non-Queensryche aficionados, "Silent Lucidity," written by band co-founder and ex-member Chris DeGarmo.

Disc No. 2 is a collector's edition bonus disc and includes a number of previously unreleased tracks. And as if that weren't enough, according to their Web site (Queensryche.com), a new album titled Take Cover is scheduled to hit shelves in November.

Since the band's earliest beginnings, Queensryche's prog-metal sound has earned them a place in eight-track players and iPods of rockers across the world. They put on a hell of a show, and why wouldn't they? Do something for 20 years, and you're bound to get damn good at it.

Local favorite Midline—who also have a long, successful history together—kick off the night.

Sept. 27, 8 p.m., with Midline, $29.50, The Big Easy, 416 S. 9th St., 208-376-1212.
