Ready, Set ... Start Gift Shopping

Black Friday cometh. Forget the mall, the thrift store and every big-box chain located in the snarl of the Milwaukee and Franklin mash-up when the mood to do a little holiday shopping strikes your fancy. Head to the coffee shop instead.

If the mood hits on First Thursday, stay tuned to BW in our First Thursday issue due out December 5 for all of the evening's shopping opportunities, but here's a heads-up on one that looks particularly interesting. Flying M Coffeeshop in downtown Boise hosts the Boise State Metal Arts club as they host a sale featuring the creative work of 15 different students.

If the mood hits when a drive out to Nampa is in order, the Flying M Coffeegarage in downtown Nampa hosts a Hip Holiday Market December 1. Local crafters and artists are putting together a nice little Saturday of shopping. Check out handmade goods like jewelry, body products, kids' gifts, clothing, and accessories from Intentions Perfumery, Mosaic Essentials, MaryMakesArt, Revive-Unique Handicrafts and Zucru Creations.

Thu., Dec. 6, 6-10 p.m., Flying M Coffeehouse, 500 W. Idaho St., 208-345-4320.

Sat., Dec. 1, 2-10 p.m., Flying M Coffeegarage, 1314 Second St. S., Nampa, 208-467-5533.

Leave the audience and get on the stage

Each year, Boise State celebrates Women's History Month with a production of The Vagina Monologues, a play based on the hundreds of interviews conducted by playwright Eve Ensler, who polled women for opinions about their bodies. The show won't be staged until the end of February 2008, but Boise State is gearing up for the performance with a series of auditions for potential actresses. No acting experience is required; however, women interested in participating must be somehow affiliated with Boise State (as a faculty or staff member or student).

Auditions are Fri., Nov. 30, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sat., Dec. 1, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information or to schedule an audition time, call the Boise State Women's Center at 208-426-4259.

Speaking of Auditions

The nearly 60-year-old Boise Little Theater holds auditions in December for its February performance of In the Rest Room at Rosenblooms, a contemporary comedy about three lonely, elderly ladies who meet daily in the dated lounge of a department store rest room.

The show runs February 22-23, 28-29, and March 1-2, 5-8. Auditions will be held for four women ages 65 to 85, and four non-speaking parts for women of any age on Sat., Dec. 15, and Sun., Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. at Boise Little Theater, 100 E. Fort St., 208-342-5104.

Idaho Shakespeare Festival may move indoors during the cold weather, but the company certainly doesn't hibernate. Tickets are now on sale for its 2008 Family Reading Series to begin on December 9. Familiar faces from the festival stage four Sunday matinees of children's plays by simply reading the play, rather than acting it out with costumes and an elaborate stage design. A Christmas Carol kicks off the mini-season with performances on Dec. 9 and Dec. 16. Peter and the Wolf is featured Feb. 10, and April 13's performance is Hansel and Gretel.

All performances start at 2 p.m. Series tickets are $18 for children under 12 and $25 for adults. Single performances prices are $7 for children under 12 and $10 for adults. Children 3 and under are free. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 208-336-9221 or visit IdahoShakespeare.org. Fulton Street Center for the Arts, 854 Fulton St.
