Reef-er Reggae Madness

"Water for Roots. Love of Reggae. Fire for Rock." That is the ambiguous, stoned-sounding creed of Seattle-based world reggae rock band Kore Ionz, and on Saturday, they're bringing their beats to Boise. Comprised of members from five continents, Kore Ionz hopes to use their music to spread the message of compassion and a love for all cultures. Fresh off a busy summer of touring and music festivals, Kore Ionz will continue their journey here at Reef, promoting their album Half-hour Revolution. The band has promised to donate half of their CD proceeds to Seattle nonprofit The Service Board, a program designed to support mentorship and empowerment programs for youth in marginalized communities. Having shared the stage with acclaimed artists such as Bob Marley's Original Wailers and the Boogie Brown Band, Kore Ionz is ready to deliver some feel-good grooves and showcase their fusion of roots reggae, rock and world rhythms.

Saturday, Oct. 24, 9:30 p.m., $5, Reef, 105 S. Sixth St., 208-287-9200, reefboise.com.

I strongly disagree with Jeff Lake's opening statement that the Kore Ionz motto is "ambiguous" and "stoned-sounding," especially since the rest of the preview sounds very positive. To me, the motto clearly and succinctly expresses the group's musical philosophy, so I suspect Jeff describes it as "ambiguous" simply because reggae music is not to his taste, or perhaps the "creed" is beyond his comprehension. Either way, his comment comes across as snide, and in conjunction with the rest of the review, quite contradictory.

Saw Kore Ionz in Seattle, and I dig the effect their music has on me. Relaxed, open, optimistic...which makes sense, considering their mission. As for their "creed," while I'd agree it's ambiguous in the sense that it has both literal and figurative meanings, I think that "stoned-sounding" doesn't really resonate with me as a descriptive. Maybe it's just my stoner friends, but they tend to talk about food and say "dude." Anyway, Kore Ionz rock, and go especially well with an ice cold Red Stripe.

I'm guessing the reviewer isn't very familiar with reggae music and is lazily relying on tired stereotypes, which is pretty ironic since Kore Ionz does so much to break down stereotypes by fusing cultures and musical traditions and giving back to their community.

Here's the review Jeff Lake should have written:

Their sound is innovative yet accessible, the lead singer has a fantastic voice, and the band is technically very tight. They are best heard live, so Boise is very lucky this weekend!

I saw Kore Ionz at Bumbershoot this year and they had a crowd of 1000 swaying and smiling for the whole set. I was stone cold sober and loved every minute of it. Go to this show, you won't regret it!

I agree with Dia's comment. Roots, reggae, rock. Water, love, fire. These are core earth elements and Kore Ionz represents well. I saw these guys at Bumbershoot in Seattle a couple of months ago, and their positive energy is sincere, magnetic and contagious. Each one of the band's members is an incredibly talented musician on their own, and they play really well together.

Come out to Reef on Saturday and I guarantee you're in for a great show!

I have been lucky enough to see Kore Ionz live many times and I must say, the outpouring of love, positive anergy and just solid great music has been truly unparalleled.

As for the reviewers "ambiguous stoned-sounding" comment, I cant agree. Kore Ionz is expressly dedicated to the building of community and the education and advocation of the youth of the world. Promoting drug use does not follow their clear message.

If I were in Boise, I would be there in a heart beat! I'm jealous of all of you that have the opportunity to cruise Kore Ionz style!!!
