Idaho Rivers United celebrates Idaho's waterways

Love Idaho’s rivers, especially the gem that runs through the middle of Boise? Well, then it’s time to start showing instead of telling.

Idaho Rivers United is hosting a Boise River cleanup and Wild Rivers party on Thursday, Aug. 13, to celebrate those gorgeous waterways that make the state so special. The cleanup effort will focus on the stretch of the Boise River from Lucky Peak to Barber Park, a section which isn’t part of the usual river sweep route, said IRU spokesperson Nikki Karpavich.

Volunteers will meet at Municipal Park just before 3 p.m. to carpool to worksites, then crews will be left on their own to scour the riverbanks until 6 p.m.

The actual fun starts at 6 p.m., when the Wild Rivers party kicks off at Municipal Park where IRU members and guests will join cleanup volunteers to celebrate both the Boise River and the newest addition to the state’s Wild and Scenic Rivers—316 miles of the Bruneau, Jarbidge and Owyhee rivers.

That celebration comes in the form of live music from the Bitterbrush Blues Band, beer from Sockeye Brewery, wine from Barefoot, as well as food

As part of a joint fundraiser with Idaho Steelhead and Salmon United, a Clackacraft drift boat (worth roughly $12,000) will be raffled off. Only 250 tickets will be available, costing $100 each.

IRU also has a brand new $25,000 grant to celebrate that night as well. The grant, from Coca-Cola North America and Aquarius Spring will be used to fund IRU’s continuing watershed conservation efforts on the Boise River.

“We wanted to celebrate it, and what better way than a river cleanup?” Karpavich said.

Anyone who wants to help with the river cleanup should e-mail Karpavich at nikki@idahorivers.org, or call the IRU office at 208-343-7481. Volunteers need to bring a pair of work gloves and wear a good pair of shoes or boots.

Those who just want to join the party are welcome to do so for a $10 suggested donation. Cleanup volunteers eat for free.
