Salmon season closes then opens somewhere else

While the South Fork of the Salmon River closed July 10 for salmon fishing, for a short time anglers will be able to fish for salmon on the Upper Salmon, a 19-mile stretch of river that has not been open to salmon fishing since 1978. Lemhi County businesses are wringing their hands at their 27 year drought of fishing tourists.

During the 24 day South Fork of the Salmon River season, preliminary reports from Idaho Fish and Game showed 1,085 salmon harvested and another 373 caught and released. The average amount of time fishing per angler per fish? Seventeen hours.
