Swoopes on Being Out

As basketball looms around the next bend in sports seasons, WNBA Houston Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes recently outted herself in an interview with ESPN The Magazine. Honored last month as the WNBA's Most Valuable Player, 34-year-old Swoopes says she was reluctant to publicly disclose her sexual orientation because of her status as a role model.

"It's not something I want to throw in people's faces," Swoopes told ESPN. "I'm tired of having to hide my feelings about the person I care about. About the person I love."

Swoops is a three-time gold medallist, three-time MVP and four-time WMBA championship winner in a sport that gets far less publicity than its male counterpart, making her--despite her now highly-publicized sexual orientation--a role model for many young women.
