Half an inch of snow has fallen on Tamarack Resort, bringing the mid-mountain total to just over a foot. It's not much, but the Cascade-area ski resort is open Nov. 14 for a one-day event as a preview of its official opening day Friday, Dec. 11.

From 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the Discovery Chair will get skiers and snowboarders to the beginner hill, which has been fitted with a mini terrain park as part of "Sneak Peek Saturday." Day passes are $10, and children ages 7 and under ski free. Food will be available at Canoe Grill, and a selection of rental equipment will be available as well.

The event is part of Tamarack's season pass sale: Adult passes are $409 until Monday, Nov. 16, after which the price bumps up to $449.

Closer to Boise, the base depth at Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area is 8 inches, with no opening date announced. Bogus recently hired a new general manager, Brad Wilson, who sees the continuation of Bogus' success coming from a combination of snowmaking and higher lift ticket prices.

"The last thing we want to do is kill the golden goose," Wilson said in October. "That's always tough to pull off, especially at a ski area that's so community oriented. We do need to find a way to be more financially sustainable, though. If you look at the pricing and the cost of living index, we have not kept pace with that."

Wilson's comments came after the release of a feasibility study that included increasing summer activities at the resort.
