A northern Idaho teacher announced she'll mount a 2016 challenge to Dalton Gardens Republican Rep. Vito Barbieri, who has routinely made headlines with controversial statements, including an instance in the 2016 session of the Idaho Legislature in which he asked a health care professional
if a woman could receive a gynecological exam by swallowing a small camera.
Barbieri is also not such a big fan of public schools, writing on his campaign website, "If you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and God, then pull your kids out of that Godless institution."
When asked during a 2012 debate if he would like to back away from his controversial remarks, Barbieri doubled-down, saying
, "My words exactly. The first alternative is home schooling."
The Coeur d'Alene Press reports
St. Maries High School English teacher Kathy Kahn, a Democrat, will be running
against Barbieri for a District 2 seat in the Idaho House. A native of Post Falls, Kahn has been teaching in St. Maries since 1989.
"I've been behind the scenes complaining and it's time for me to step up and do something about it if I can," Kahn told the Press
According to the Press,
among Kahn's political advisers are former Idaho Sen. Mike Blackbird and Chris Carlson, press secretary for former Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus.
