The History of the Boise Hole

Idaho State Historical Society
The historic Eastman building largely burned to the ground in January 1987. The building had been empty since 1978, when the Boise Redevelopment Agency ordered it demolished. The BRA identified eight downtown blocks for removal in hopes of developing a large mall in the heart of the city. The building deteriorated and became a refuge for squatters before what was rumored to be arson destroyed the building. The wreckage was later removed, and the Boise Hole was born.
