The Spoils of War

Battles of the bands are one way for a band to get a taste of what it's like to succeed in the real world of music. According to 1332 Records co-owner Byl Kravetz, in the case of the now-underway Battle of the Bands sponsored by his label, the winner receives recording time at Mad Maddox Studios and a CD released and promoted by 1332.

This particular battle pitted indie, punk and metal bands against each other, with Sprockets (indie), Lullabi Polar (punk), Manville (punk) and Postmortem Twitch (metal) winning their individual nights. Kravetz said he held two punk nights because "the scene is thick with punk bands right now."

The wins earned them the opportunity to duke it out at finals night on March 3.

Greg Wallace, Lullabi Polar's bass player, wrote BW a short note, describing what was behind his band's win in true ass-kicking spirit: "Lucas Gushwa is in the pit, head-butting slam dancers while he sings. Carol Gorman is pounding away on the drum kit ... Greg Wallace is bouncing up and down, pounding on his bass strings that seem about to break. Kyle Man holds it together by churning out the chords on his guitar [as he looks out] over the audience." Wallace wrote that people can see and hear "more of the same, plus some new surprises" when they compete in the final round.

1332 Records' Battle of the Bands, March 3, 9 p.m., $2. The Bouquet, 1010 W. Main St., 208-345-6605, TheBouquet.net.
