3SR: Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Try as he might to vary his resume by sprinkling in superhero flicks (Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3; Darkman), westerns (The Quick and the Dead) and dramas (For the Love of the Game), director Sam Raimi will never abandon his roots in hokey horror (the Evil Dead trilogy). Even Drag Me to Hell—touted by previews as a legitimate fright-fest, features so many Evil Dead-esque, grossly ridiculous moments—like when an aged gypsy woman curses our loan officer heroine that refused her a mortgage extension, then tries to gum her to death when her teeth fall out during a parking garage mugging—that it's clear Raimi is either unable or unwilling to discontinue his love affair with Three Stooges-inspired gore.

Despite a few scares, Raimi's gags and all-too-evident plot twist (Raimi co-penned the script with his brother, Ivan) probably left his pair of young Hollywood stars (Alison Lohman, Justin Long) hoping this title will find a cult following since it certainly isn't going to satiate fans of true horror.
