Boise Mayor Dave Bieter was happy when he heard Otter propose spending $865,000 to build a sobering and detoxification center in the Treasure Valley.
"The biggest contributing factor to our growing prison population is drug and alcohol abuse," Otter said. The money is intended to match contributions from area governments, hospitals and the United Way of Treasure Valley.
Bieter hustled to thank Otter.
"I want to thank Gov. Otter personally," Bieter said in a prepared statement. "I know I speak for all of the members of the Mayor's Detox Steering Committee when I say how thrilled I am."
OK, so they got one so far. But to squeeze anything more out of the Legislature, the city is going to need a lobbyist. And although they've been trying to find one, they're still not ready to hire, yet.
"We've got to get rolling on this," said Bieter spokesman Michael Zuzel, as the gavels sounded up the street at the Capitol.
