If Gross thinks these are "hateable characters", then he needs to look inside his own psyche and not analyze others. I find the characters endearing and likeable. I have many friends who are like them. The show does exaggerate for effect, but that is a necessary part of this kind of satire.
The journey looking for the natal roots of the chicken the couple is going to eat stuck me as so right on target because the day before I saw it I had a meal in which the waiter told me the pedigree of the pork I was going to have, its, name, age, farm of origin, parent's names, and a lot of other information I really didn't need to enjoy the item.
Another example, I have lost friends in Portland who chose their own veganism rather than have a friend who likes a hamburger every once in a while, but most of my vegan friends accept me for who I am and vice versa. We still get to mock each other, like Portlandia does about this frequent subject.
I lived in Austin, too, for many years. The show could be called "Austinlandia", but the whole current Gov. Perry and rest of Texas "thang" would get in the way. Portland is a mythical place for most Americans without too many overlays, except for basketball and rose lovers.
love that next to the artice there was an ad for republicbike.com "custom fixies"
Me thinks thou doth protest too much. Is that your ox I see being gored?
A "minstrel show"? Racist POS.
Oldman captures this movie's soul. He is the complete Smiley, even so many years after I read the book. A fine piece of film that shows how much fun a mental challenge can be versus the world overflowing with special effects.
i mean hundreds of thousands
Wow. This is a fantastic example of white privilege....to whine about a show making fun of a small trendy white subset of people (hipsters) to the systematic oppression of hundreds of black people through reinforcing cultural terms such as black face in minstrel shows.
I am just going to sit here and whine about my whiteness. Ugh, I wish I wasn't objectified on TV. I mean seriously, there are no examples of positive white people on TV. The only time they choose to cover white people is when they make fun of pretentious hipsters. I feel that my unique hipsterdom is threatened by America laughing at the irony of how absorbed I am in my own quest to avoid consumerism through alternative methods of elitist consumption.
White People Problems
---and written by a white person, who has hipster tendencies.
Either Josh is a complete idiot douche or he is a genius angling for an entire episode of Portlandia to be written about him. I'm leaning towards the former but this article would make for perhaps the best episode of Portlandia ever. Im just afraid that poor Josh wouldnt realize that he himself embodies what Portlandia is, and he'd start laughing for all the wrong reasons.
Us Northwesterns like to take credit for 1)keep (insert city) Weird slogan and 2) 12th. Both which came from Texas. Hummmm...we must secretly want to be big and bad like Texas. I live in Portland don't really like the show and do feel like it pokes fun at a certain sect of people. But than again a lot of comedians and shows do the same thing.
Clearly Mr. Gross you have no idea who Carrie Brownstein, Fred Armisen, and Jonathan Krisel are. They are arguably all hipsters and are clearly poking fun at behaviors they most likely at some point engaged in. Having seen all of the episodes, in no way do I think the shows writers and producers seek to demonize people who pickle all of their food. I seriously doubt the show's aim is to cast uber-ethical organic diners as sub-human.
To quote your own article, "it's important to stop and ask yourself if you're laughing for the right reasons. And there's a good chance you aren't", you might want to stop and think about the parallels your drawing. satire = minstrel show? hipsters = segregated African Americans?
You've completely missed the mark here, and even though yes, I would say they occasionally satirize hipsters, I think they're poking fun at american culture in general. Case and point:
Josh, you are a total twat.
My girlfiend told me there was an article 'comparing Portlandia to a minstrel show' in the Boise Weekly. I guessed 'Josh Gross?'
He's blatantly trying to googlebomb Boise with these terrible articles
the writer was just trying to sound "smart" he needed a "topic" to write about and this is what he came up with....but, this article really does suck. so pointless.
I think Austin stole it from Portland, not the other way around.
white people problems
and just like, that we're national!
Mr. Gross, you are one funny dude. You've taken the comedy to the next level. Congratulations on a hilarious send-up.
I can't tell whether this article is completely insane or a brilliant way of highlighting the fact that Portlandia is one of the few instances of Fred Armisen NOT being guilty of minstrelsy.
