The Kill Joy

Otter's inferior past is Idaho's inferior future
I didn't set out to be an elitist. In the beginning, I didn't once think my proclivities were more polished than ... oh, let's say ... Otter's.

Grand Old Strategy

Deremembrance of things past
When last we visited with Red, he was deep into enunciation therapy, a prerequisite to completing a comeback as my sidekick. For several weeks, he was making great strides, I thought.

Off Color

You du man, Steele ... not the man
Republicans want Harry Reid to give up his position of majority leader. They insist he made a racist comment during the campaign season, just as Trent Lott did a few years ago, and that he should follow Lott's lead and get lost.

The Memory Hole

Haiti news coverage turns sublimely ridiculous
American news producers and editors have long been masters of the Memory Hole, purposefully omitting the most relevant information in stories that would otherwise make the current regime look bad.

David Dinkins Redux

Obama will drag down Democrats in November
Normally I stay out of the political prognostication racket. It's as thankless as writing for Arianna Huffington.

The Haitian Earthquake

Why the blood is on our hands

Mail and Commentary, Feb. 3

"Where in the hell do you get off justifying your comparison to Amos and Andy by assuming that "so few" white people would recognize the names of black leaders?"

Mail and Commentary Jan. 27

Haiti is a metaphor for an America weakened by conservatives.

Mail and Commentary Jan. 20

Please guys, whether or not you agree with their policies, don't call them Tea Baggers.

Opinion: Male Circumcision Alone Won't Solve Africa's HIV Problem

Anti-AIDS measures cannot be considered separately from Africa's cultural context. Education must be emphasized.
Those who do, think it is good. Those who don't, think it is awful. Each thinks its version of the penis is superior and makes men manly.

Note

Note: The Online Reality

These days a good local newspaper does more for its readers than sit on a shelf for a week.

Note: All press is good press

Those readers who fall into that "medium-sized segment of the population" will steer clear of Big Bird's regardless of how good the food is. Those who don't are helping Big Bird's to have what, I presume, is a record week in profits.

Note: Somewhere along the way, I learned not to take myself too seriously. At least not all the time.

And while none of the members of Built to Spill were harmed in the making of this week's feature story, it occurs to me that a number of cows were fatally harmed in the making of this week's issue.
