At 7 p.m. tonight, the CW show One Tree Hill will feature the title track from local band Low-fi’s 2007 debut release Where You Are.

“It may be sort of background music, but it’s really cool,” said Low-fi drummer Mike Rundle. “And the show puts out a compilation CD at the end of the year. And there’s other stuff that could come of it. It’s another way to get our name out there.”

This past weekend, I took a trip to New York—along with 140 other Boiseans including mayor Dave Bieter—for the opening of the Boise Basque Museum's exhibit “Hidden in Plain Sight: The Basques" at Ellis Island. Here's a little recap of what went down on Saturday, Feb. 6, the official unveiling of the exhibit.

Bleary-eyed, we boarded the bus at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday morning and wound our way out of flashy Times Square down to Battery Park. As flurries of snow swirled around the tired, huddled masses waiting for the ferry to Ellis Island, we noted the irony with a shiver.

Once on the ferry, groups of Basques from Boise, New York and even Spain chattered excitedly, struggling to gain their sea legs.

<li

We disembarked on Ellis Island and scurried into the warm building.

Disembarking from the ferry into the snow flurry on Ellis Island.

Before the exhibit's official unveiling, the Biotzetik Basque Choir and the Oinkari Basque Dancers performed for the gathering crowd.

The Biotzetik Basque Choir performs.

The Oinkari Basque Dancers.

The Oinkari Basque Dancers get footloose.

The Oinkari Basque Dancers bust out the high kicks.

After speeches by Guillermo Echenique, general secretary of foreign action of the Basque government; Boise mayor Dave Bieter, Patricia Lachiondo, president of the Basque Museum and Cultural Center and William Douglass, coordinator emeritus of Basque studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, it was finally time for the ribbon cutting.

Finally, it was time for the ribbon cutting.

Here's a peep at what the exhibit looks like inside.

After the opening ceremonies were finished, we had a break before the fancy all-night feast and dance party in SoHo. Man, anyone who thinks Basques don't know how to party are sorely mistaken. The wine over-floweth, the food kept on coming and Amuma Says No played into the wee hours of the morn. Heck, even my grandma didn't leave the dancefloor 'til 2 a.m.

Fancy table settings at the Puck Building in SoHo.

Every e-mail I receive is important, of course, but I'm not great at prioritizing them. And it never fails that thinking, "I'll get to that one later," inevitably leads to, "It's been three months. What the hell happened to that e-mail?" Or, worse yet, forgetting about it all together.

The I.T. Guy sent me a video by tech writer Gina Trapani about taking control of my e-mail inbox. I'm putting it into practice tonight.

If it changes my life, I'll post an update. If it doesn't, I'll pretend I never heard of the whole plan and forget about the post all together.

Late last year, racist fliers began showing up inside copies of Boise Weekly, as well as at Boise State and, as reported by the Press-Trib, on car windshields.

We posted this copy of the flier on Cobweb in December. The icky parts have been blacked out. Yep, lots of icky parts.

In addition to the unveiling of the exhibition, there will be performances by the Oinkari Basque Dancers and the Biotzetik Basque Choir, as well as speakers, including: Guillermo Echenique, general secretary of foreign action of the Basque government; Patricia Lachiondo, president of the Basque Museum and Cultural Center and William Douglass, coordinator emeritus of Basque studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The House State Affairs Committee this morning sent a Joint Memorial—that's when the Idaho Legislature decides to send a letter to Congress—back to its Democratic sponsors, demanding they be nicer to corporations and at least a little mean to unions.

Rep. Brian Cronin, a Boise Democrat, agreed to both changes and hopes to resubmit the document to the committee for a potential hearing.

The memorial urges Congress to "negate the deleterious effects of the United States Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission." That's the decision that defines corporations as people with regard to electioneering expenditures.

You can read the decision here [pdf].

The memorial starts out downright patriotic:"We the People of the state of Idaho are endowed with certain unalienable rights that are expressly conveyed to people, and not to corporations ..."

Seems obvious enough. But the electioneering law that the Supremes negated applies equally to corporations and unions, and the first draft of the Idaho memorial left out mention of labor unions (though Idaho AFL-CIO boss Dave Whaley sat in the back of the hearing). So several Republicans suggested Cronin take his letter back and add some language reigning in labor as well.

The committee also got hung up on the word "evil" which appeared in the text in the context of a 1907 Senate report on campaign finance. The report stated: "[t]he evils of the use of [corporate] money in connection with political elections are so generally recognized that the committee deems it unnecessary to make any argument in favor of the general purpose of this measure."

We have no argument either. Just don't be evil.

citydesk just got a call from the BBC Scotland seeking local reaction to the charges filed against 10 U.S. missionaries in Haiti.

Haitian authorities have charged the group—led by Laura Silsby, a member of Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian—with child abduction and criminal conspiracy, according to the BBC, which seems to have a crack presence on the ground in Port-au-Prince.

"I feel good," Silsby told reporters today, as the group was loaded into a van outside the courthouse. "I trust in God."

Nathaniel Hoffman

Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian.

In case you missed it, the missionaries, eight of whom are from Idaho, went down to Haiti under the auspices of Silsby's charity, New Life Children's Refuge, to "save" orphans in the wake of the earthquake there. But many of the 33 orphans they gathered up and put on a bus headed to the Dominican Republic turned out to not be orphans at all.

The 10 were arrested last week and charged today, after several days of speculation that they might be sent home to face charges.

The Idaho Statesman also revealed today that Silsby is not all that she claims. Silsby has faced eight civil lawsuits and 14 unpaid wage claims in recent years, her house was foreclosed on last year, she has racked up a long list of speeding tickets and was recently divorced, the Statesman's Katy Moeller reported today.

If you grew up in the early '80s, you probably did. Now you can relive them.

Shout! Factory is releasing 30th anniversary, special edition, remastered DVDs of the seminal flicks Rock 'N' Roll High School and Suburbia in May. Both movies are presented in widescreen and both DVDs are loaded with extras.

Rock 'N' Roll High (1979) is the tale of a group of students who, with the help of their rock music-loving leader Riff Randell (the wee PJ Soles) and The Ramones (yes, the actual Ramones) fight to wrest control of their school from their stodgy new principal.

The story goes that The Ramones agreed to be in the film after learning icon Roger Corman was behind it as executive producer. Johnny Ramone is believed to have said, “When we found out Roger Corman was behind the picture, we said, sure, we’ll do it because we knew he had a reputation and we knew he made good movies.”

Good movies? That's up for interpretation. Myriad movies? No question about it. Corman directed about 100 movies and television episodes and produced about 1,000 more (OK, maybe 60 and 400 respectively) and was the master of the low-budget show.

Corman also served as producer on Suburbia (1984). Written and directed by Penelope Spheeris (Wayne's World, The Beverly Hillbillies) this film follows the lives of some disaffected teens for whom family is what you make of it. Soundtrack includes music by TSOL, The Vandals and D.I. and features the film debut of Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

If you were ever a teen, ever played a record or ever felt like a singer was vocalizing everything you were feeling, both of these flicks are must-sees.

These titles should be in stores on Tuesday, May 4. Visit shoutfactory.com for more info.

The 17th annual Valentines for AIDS hosted by Flying M Coffeehouse has officially begun. The annual silent auction is one of those quintessentially Boise events—if you haven't participated as an artist or a bidder or even a gawker, you could be accused of not actually being a Boise resident.

Each year, the proceeds benefit SNAP, a local organization that provides assistance to HIV/AIDS patients. Last year, more than $23,000 went into SNAP's coffers from the auction.

Although the bidding gets downright fierce in the final minutes of the two-week-long auction, you can bet Flying M will be one of the hottest stops during tonight's First Thursday trek.

What to expect? Everything from a painted male form to a bucket of neon. No joke.

Stanhope will be here in Boise on Friday, Feb. 26 at Neurolux, so we can decide then. I'm guessing it won't be a non-smoking show.

I've often wanted to peek over the tan stucco wall that blocks this house from view as I've driven past it on Hill Road. Behind the wall, I discovered a three-level brick-and-stucco home surrounded by a beautiful wooded setting. Inside, the spacious dwelling feels like it was crafted to integrate modern efficiencies like radiant floor heat and on-demand water heating with the 90-year-old structure's soulful character. The sunlight-filled master suite and a second bedroom are located upstairs. In the basement…

Ba-Da-Bing! For Tony Soprano, those words signified naked dancing girls, clandestine meetings and solace. For me, they mean a mouthful of flavor, and I get to keep most of my dollar bills. When Eli's Italian Deli opened in the back of Boise Cafe on the corner of 10th and Bannock streets, I didn't venture in right away. It doesn't look like a typical deli and I wasn't sure of the protocol. The counter is way at the back of the…

Few puppet shows feature the following advisory: "Not appropriate for children due to language and adult content such as full puppet nudity." Full puppet nudity. Sexy. But Avenue Q, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, isn't all puppet porn. The story follows a recent college grad named Princeton who moves to New York City and shacks up in a sleazy neighborhood on Avenue Q. Princeton soon befriends his neighbors--an out-of-work comedian named Brian and his unemployed therapist fiancee Christmas Eve, the…

Hard to believe, but it's been nearly eight years since we last saw Mel Gibson starring in a movie. You might have missed it, but his face has aged considerably during this absence. In a nutshell: No one has an answer. Still. Print isn't showing any long-term signs of recovery…
