You getting a raise today?

Posted By on Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 3:24 PM

About six percent of Idaho's workers are getting a raise today.

The new federal minimum wage goes into effect today, increasing the lowest paying jobs to an hourly rate of $7.25 up from $6.55.

The AP reported today that some worry the new wage increase will prolong the recession, forcing some small businesses to cut employees' hours or layoff more employees.

In Idaho the Department of Labor released a statement estimating that the state's overall payroll would be affected by one-tenth of a percent. Among hourly workers, it's no secret around Idaho that the state lags behind its northwest neighbors in wage rates. Both Oregon and Washington offer slightly better paying minimum-wage jobs with Oregon's minimum set at $8.40 and Washington still claiming top spot with the highest state minimum in the nation at $8.55.

Are you getting a raise today? What you're planning to do with your extra 70 cents an hour?
