Boise Anti-BP Rally Something of a Flop

The continuing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has aroused a national determination for a clear and decisive response from the government. One group, Seize BP, is going so far as to call for BP's assets to be seized and redistributed as aid to the affected areas, and is organizing a series of national demonstrations calling for justice.

To further that effort, Seize BP's Boise chapter held an anti-BP rally in downtown today, or at least they tried.

The rally, scheduled from 3:30-6:30 p.m. for the corner of Front Street and Capital Boulevard, was mainly publicized through the Boise Seize BP facebook and myspace pages, which have 99 and 44 friends respectively. And despite 135 online supporters of the effort fully aware of the rally, when it came down to making a sign and hitting the street, only one person showed up.

There were however, representatives of five news organizations on the scene, including BW.

The single protester, obviously excited with the nine to one ratio of reporter to protester, started talking about corporations having too much power and held a sign that read, “We need government bigger than BP.”

Since the rally had not gained much momentum BW decided to leave and come back in half an hour to see how things would play out.

At 3:52 p.m. there was a post on the facebook and myspace pages saying that the rally had been canceled due to “unavoidable circumstances," along with an assurance that the group would be out flyering over the weekend.

Just to be sure, BW checked in one last time. When we got back to the site of the rally at 4:15 p.m. the one protester was gone along with all reporters.
