Tamarack Set to Open in December

Posted By on Tue, Nov 16, 2010 at 10:32 AM

The Idaho Board of Land Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday morning to approve a carefully crafted agreement which will result in Tamarack opening for skiing on Monday, Dec. 20, the first time the ski lifts will operate since March 2009.

Under the agreement, the Tamarack Municipal Association—a non-profit made up of Tamarack landowners—will sub-lease the mountain and ski equipment from the defunct resort. The plan is to reopen on Dec. 20 and remain open every day through the holidays, then open on a four-day-a-week schedule until early April 2011.

As part of the agreement, the 2010 lease payment of $250,000 (the land is owned by the state) will be paid immediately, and half of the 2011 lease payment will be paid by Friday, Nov. 19.

As the operations start up, creditors including Credit Suisse continue their legal proceedings against the resort while attempting to find a prospective buyer to take over the operations.

"My only comment is, bravo," said Secretary of State Ben Ysursa, a member of the board. "The state and the land endowment can only benefit by having operations at Tamarack."

"I echo those comments," said State Controller Donna Jones. "A lot of people worked very hard to get it to this point."

Ysursua, Jones, and Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter (who had no comment) voted to approve the deal. Attorney General Lawrence Wasden and Director of Public Instruction Tom Luna were absent.
