Obama to Freeze Federal Pay, Approximately 14,200 Idahoans Affected

Nearly 14,000 Idahoans are getting some bad news on Monday, Nov. 29. President Barack Obama is expected to announce a two-year pay freeze for all civilian federal workers.

The plan is to wipe out a 1.4 percent across-the-board raise in Fiscal Year 2011. That's expected to save $2 billion in the current fiscal year. As it impacts base salaries going forward, the plan is also expected to save $29 billion over five years, and more than $60 billion over 10 years.

Since 2000, federal pay and benefits have increased 3 percent annually above inflation, compared with 0.8 percent for private sector workers.

The freeze would not affect that nation's uniformed military personnel.

According to Bob Fick, communications manager with the Idaho Department of Labor, there were 14,200 federal civilian jobs in Idaho in October.
