Lauren McLean Appointed as New Council Member

She's been a consultant, an investment manager, a conservation lobbyist, a parks commissioner, a Planning and Zoning commissioner and a manager of Boise's Foothills Open Space Initiative. And now Mayor Dave Bieter wants Lauren McLean to replace City Council Member Vern Bisterfeldt.

Thursday morning, Bieter will put McLean's name before a special meeting of the council. If approved, McLean would be sworn into office at the January 11 City Council meeting and would need to stand for election in November of 2011. That term would last only two years because Bisterfeldt's current term would lapse in 2013. Bisterfeldt will return as an Ada County Commissioner in January.

McLean is a graduate of Notre Dame with a Masters from Boise State. She's held positions with Idaho Conservation League and Trillium Asset Management. In 2001, she served as manager of the 2001 Foothills Open Space Initiative, which since its passage, has been used to protect more than 10,000 acres of undeveloped Foothills land. From 2001 to 2005 McLean served on the Boise Parks Commission. She currently sits on Boise's Planning and Zoning Commission. If approved as a council member, she would step down from P&Z.

"This was one of the most difficult decisions I have made as Mayor," said Bieter. "In the end it was Lauren's extensive history of community involvement, her strong grasp of the issues facing the city today and her unwavering commitment to Boise's future that made her my choice for this position."
