Economic Outlook, Part II

Posted By on Fri, Jan 7, 2011 at 9:01 AM

Idaho lawmakers have begun another day examining reams of economic data presented by officials and analysts from the public and private sectors. Before today is over, they'll hear from Micron, auto dealers, retailers, grocers and foresters.

In analysis from the state's Commerce Dept., it was learned that Small Business Innovative Research Grants have pumped more than $61 into Idaho for every dollar spent. To date $140,000 was awarded to 53 businesses. In return, 38 direct jobs were created with an average salary of $64,000.

Some other findings:
-Tourism, a division of Commerce, contributed 6 percent ($3.5 billion) to the Idaho Gross State Product.
-Commerce reported that for Fiscal Year 2011, they've already scheduled 20 site visits from companies looking to relocate.
-Wonder where Idaho exports are going? If they're not heading north, they're heading east. Canada tops the list, receiving more than $800 million in Idaho products. The next six are Singapore, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. Idaho's number one export commodity is electrical machinery ($1.7 billion), followed by aircraft, precious metals and dairy.
