Phil Hart Resigns Vice Chair of Transportation Committee, Panel Drops Ethics Complaints

Controversial Idaho legislator Phil Hart (R-Athol) is a little less politically powerful. In exchange for dismissal of ethic complaints, Hart resigned his vice chairmanship of the House Transportation Committee.

The announcement came in the wake of two meetings Friday morning—one private, one public. A bipartisan panel of Hart's peers voted unanimously to drop the charges stemming from Hart's refusal to pay federal and state taxes. Hart has also been accused of removing state-owned timber without payment.

The Internal Revenue Service still holds tax liens on Hart totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"I think the whole body needed to move on," said Hart. "We have work to do."
