IEA President: We Do Not Condone Violence or Harassment

Idaho's largest teachers' association is urging its membership to "behave in a responsible, civil manner" in the wake of two incidents involving Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna.

Early today, Luna reported to Nampa Police that his truck had been vandalized. On Feb. 12, Luna said he was harassed by an educator outside the home of Luna's mother.

"The IEA has been involved in contentious battles throughout our nearly 120-year history," said Sherri Wood, president of the IEA. "We do not condone violence or harassment to solve problems."

Wood said Luna had accused the IEA of "union thuggery" and of sending e-mails listing officials' home addresses and phone numbers.

"We cannot, and will not, let stories like this distract us from the fact that the public remains strongly opposed to Superintendent Luna's plans to overhaul education."
