House Committee Approves Two Luna Bills

Posted By on Thu, Mar 3, 2011 at 12:57 PM

The Idaho House Education Committee overwhelmingly approved Tom Luna's plans to gut collective bargaining and end tenure for K-12 educators. Senate Bills 1108 and 1110 (which have already cleared the Senate) now head to the full House for a final vote.

Two Republicans, Rep. Jeff Nesset of Lewiston and Rep. Tom Trail of Moscow, joined Democratic Representatives Sue Chew, Brian Cronin (both of Boise) and Donna Pence of Gooding in a losing effort. All 13 aye votes for both measures came from Republicans.

"I've been rather quiet because I'm a freshman legislator," said Nesset. "But I think it's time for me to speak on this. When Superintendent Luna proposed these bills I was very excited. And there are some pieces of his plan that I actually like. But sometimes, you need to step back. You've got everybody's attention. The debate on this is statewide. But can we stop, shift and share?"

The vote followed five hours of testimony today and two days of witnesses on Tuesday and Wednesday.
