FCC May Soon Require Mobile Data Roaming

Posted By on Sat, Mar 26, 2011 at 1:37 PM

The nation's communications chief has told Congress either they can do something about mobile data roaming or he will.
In a letter to members of Congress, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said many providers have been unwilling to negotiate data roaming agreements or have "created long delays or taken other steps to impede healthy competition and roaming for consumers."

Genachowski said he's prepared to issue an order requiring operators to offer data roaming arrangements with other carriers on "reasonable terms and conditions."

Verizon and AT &T have formally objected to mandated mobile data roaming, saying the FCC had no legal authority to compel roaming since under the Communications Act, it is not classified as a common-carrier service.
