Amazon Servers Crash, Several Sites Go Down

Posted By on Fri, Apr 22, 2011 at 9:44 AM

Major social networking websites, including Foursquare and Reddit, were plagued with problems Thursday when Amazon.com's widely used web servers crashed. Amazon is best known as a marketplace for music, movies and consumer goods, but it also rents out space on its huge computer servers that help run many websites.

Reddit went into what it called "emergency mode" yesterday due to the degradation. A message on its website said, "[Amazon is] working on it, but we are still waiting for them to get to our volumes." HootSuite, which monitors Twitter accounts and Quora, a question-and-answer site, went completely down.

Amazon is blaming its problems on a data center near Washington, D.C., and this morning company officials said they were still diagnosing the cause and effect.
