Nation's Unemployment Rate Goes Up: More Jobs Added But Not Enough

Posted By on Fri, May 6, 2011 at 11:15 AM

The U.S. Labor Department reported today that 244,000 jobs were added in April, but more than 13 million people remained out of work. As a result, the nation's jobless rate bumped up to 9 percent last month from 8.8 percent in March.

As had been the case for several months, most of the increase came from private employers. but governments cut 24,000 jobs last month, with much of the drop coming at local levels, where 14,000 jobs were lost, following a decline of 15,000 in March.
