Idaho Jobless Rate Drops in April

Bucking a four-year trend, Idaho's jobless rate fell in April, resulting in 3,000 back on the payroll.

The state Labor Department reported this morning that more found work than in any other month since January 2006. The jobless rate dropped to 9.6 percent, with just more than 73,200 Idahoans still off the job.

April saw more jobs generated than normal in private sectors including manufacturing and construction, which saw some strength in commercial building. Only hotels and restaurants performed below average for the previous five years. Analysts also saw a steady recovery in employment services, a key indicator that some businesses are hiring temporary employees until they are more confident about the state's longer-term prospects.

In Ada County, unemployment improved by dropping to 9.1 percent from 9.4 percent in March. Valley County continues to be hit hard, with the April unemployment rate climbing to 16.4 percent, the highest in the state.
