Study: Medicaid Kids Wait Longer for Care

Posted By on Thu, Jun 16, 2011 at 11:04 AM

Federal law says Medicaid recipients must have the same access to care as anyone, but a new study proves that sick kids on Medicaid are waiting longer, sometimes twice as long, as children with private insurance. The study in today's New England Journal of Medicine, is the first of its kind to take a comprehensive look at specialty care for children.

According to the author, the study represents "clear and convincing evidence that children with public insurance are treated differently." The study tested hundreds of specialty clinics, and while care was denied at only 11 percent when private insurance coverage was offered, the denial rate jumped to 66 percent when the clinic was told the child was covered by Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program, better known as CHIP.
