Montana Governor Threatens ExxonMobil With Lawsuit

Posted By on Sun, Jul 10, 2011 at 11:00 AM

As an oil slick clean-up enters its second week on the Yellowstone River, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer is already threatening to take ExxonMobil to court over the incident. Schweitzer has been increasingly critical of the oil giant in the days since one of its pipelines burst below the river, spilling what the company estimates was 42,000 gallons of oil.

"We're going to hold them liable in court," Schweitzer said late Friday.

The governor withdrew the state from participating in a joint command team with ExxonMobil over what he said was the company's failure to provide information. Instead, Schweitzer opened a new state office in Billings yesterday to address residents' health and environmental concerns in the aftermath of the spill.
