White House: Balanced Budget Amendment Unrealistic

Posted By on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 11:28 AM

One day after Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador said the idea of President Obama as a deficit hawk was "a joke," the White House fired back at Labrador and other members of Congress who support H.R. 2560, the Cut, Cap and Balance Act of 2011.

On ABC's This Week program Sunday morning, Labrador said he strongly supported the measure, but the Obama administration said this morning, "Instead of pursuing an empty political statement and unrealistic policy goals, it is necessary to move beyond politics as usual and find bipartisan common ground."

Labrador said he supported the bill, along with a cap on federal spending.

"The American people asked us to change the way things are done here in Washington," Labrador told the This Week roundtable.

"H.R. 2560 sets out a false and unacceptable choice between the federal government defaulting on its obligations now or, alternatively, passing a balanced budget amendment that, in years ahead, will likely leave the nation unable to meet its core commitment of ensuring dignity in retirement," read a statement from the White House today.
