Prayer Dust-Up in Pocatello

Posted By on Wed, Jul 20, 2011 at 3:22 PM

The Idaho State Journal reports that the mayor of Pocatello is at odds with a group of atheists and agnostics from Idaho State University. ISU student James Harless of Free Thinkers, Atheists and Agnostics for Religious Tolerance filed a formal complaint over the Pocatello City Council's regular practice of beginning their meetings with an invocation that sometimes comes in the form of a prayer.

Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad told the ISJ that he's pretty sure he and his colleagues have a right to invocations and anyone is welcome to lead it. But Harless said he's equally sure that the law forbids the process. Both sides are working on a compromise.
