As a follow-up to our original post regarding the SNAP program and the ever-increasing struggle with hunger, Stephanie Finch, spokeswoman for Scentsy, reminded Citydesk that the Meridian-based company is matching every monetary donation to the Idaho Foodbank during the month of August, up to $300,000. The Halt the Hunger campaign has an ultimate goal of raising $600,000 which could translate to 1.8 million meals.

A record-breaking 45.8 million Americans relied on food stamps in May, a 12 percent increase over last year, and a 34 percent jump in two years.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the nation's weak economy, coupled with a series of storms that hit the Southeast United States increased usage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in May. Alabama alone accounted for nearly 1 million of new food stamp users.

The average recipient of food stamps in May received approximately $134, and the average household got approximately $283.
