BW first told you of an anti-idling effort in January (BW, News, "Something in the Air," Jan. 26, 2011). At the time Boise officials had begun a "listening campaign" with commercial drivers and neighborhood associations. The conversations came in the wake of a city public opinion poll that found that air quality registered the greatest increase in positive ratings over every other quality-of-life metric.

Wednesday, Aug. 17, Mayor Dave Bieter and members of the Boise City Council will be flanked by the Dept. of Environmental Quality, Idaho Transportation Dept., ACHD, Allied Waste, United Water and representatives from Key and Mountain West Banks when they officially kick off an idle reduction program. The effort will start small. The ceremony isn't expected to include much more than a sign and a slogan and some friendly encouragement for businesses to participate.
