Otter Solicits for Idaho Freedom Foundation

The Spokesman-Review's Betsy Russell reports that a letter soliciting funds for the Idaho Freedom Foundation, asking for donations to be sent to Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, ended up in her mailbox. To make the story more bizarre, the letter was addressed to Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa but with her address on it. The front of the envelope said the contents included an ""IMPORTANT OBAMACARE LAWSUIT UPDATE."

"Since it's a federal crime to open someone else's mail, I took the letter to Ysursa's office so he could open it, and he said he got one at this home as well," wrote Russell.

Inside was a membership solicitation, asking for donations of $50-$5,000.

The enclosed letter from Otter referred to his work together with the Idaho Freedom Foundation.

"I look forward to working with the Idaho Freedom Foundation in the future to ensure that we continue protecting liberty and the free market," wrote Otter.

The donation form instructs the reader to send donations "TO GOVERNOR BUTCH OTTER," care of the Idaho Freedom Foundation.

The foundation's executive director, Wayne Hoffman, told Russell that he didn't consider the label misleading.

"People understand that Butch is supporting our efforts and he's put his name behind a good organization that is supporting the principles that he's fought long and hard for," said Hoffman.

Otter's office confirmed to Russell that Otter approved the letter.

"We read and approved the letter that went out," said Jon Hanian, Otter's press secretary. "That was the extent of our involvement in it."
