Youth is Served at Quintana Campaign Launch

With a vibe usually reserved for election nights, Ben Quintana kicked off his campaign for Boise City Council last night, attracting hundreds of well-wishers, many of them young professionals.

"I think things are changing," Quintana told Citydesk. "A lot of younger people are getting more actively involved at an earlier age."

Quintana, who most recently served as director of public relations and leadership development at the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, founded Boise Young Professionals. His campaign launch event poured through the halls of the Eighth Street Marketplace Monday evening, the site of his campaign office. The demographic of his launch party definitely skewed younger.

"You typically don't see someone my age running for office," said Quintana, who is 33. "It's really exciting to see this many people coming out to support a younger person."

Quintana's candidacy follows a trend of recent council members under the age of 40. Lauren McLean, who was appointed to the council in January, is 36 years old. So is TJ Thomson, who was elected to the council in Nov. 2009 (he's younger than McLean by one month).

"It's really exciting to see a potential of having three council members, half of the council, under the age of 40," said Quintana. "That's a good balance."
