Otter Will Gladly Take Health-Care Money for Exchange

Claiming that the Obama White House "co-opted" the idea of a health-care exchange, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter said he would gladly take $30.9 million of so-called "Obamacare" money.

The funding, part of the Affordable Care Act, will be used to help set up a marketplace for consumers and businesses to have greater access to health insurance.

"This is a discussion we've been having in my administration since 2007," Otter said Tuesday. "My goal is to establish a state-based exchange emphasizing free-market principles and create a competitive marketplace for individuals and businesses to obtain the coverage they need rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all solution that may not be suitable or even workable for Idaho."

If Idaho had not set up an exchange, the federal government would have stepped in to manage the marketplace. The deadline for applying for the federal funds is Friday, Sept. 30. If all goes as planned, the exchange could be fully operational by January 2014.
