Whooping Cough Confirmed in Unvaccinated Children in Idaho Panhandle

Posted By on Thu, Nov 3, 2011 at 12:31 PM

The Spokesman Review reports that nine children in Idaho's panhandle, ranging in age from 3 months to 15 years old, have been confirmed with pertussis, better known as whooping cough.

"Most of the sick children have not been immunized," Dave Hylsky of the Panhandle Health District told the Spokesman Review.

None of the children have been hospitalized, according to the district. The disease is spread through coughing or sneezing while in close contact with others. Prescribed antibiotics can kill the infection and prevent spreading. Health officials said children diagnosed with pertussis need to stay home from school or child care until they have completed the antibiotic treatment.

Pertussis is particularly dangerous for children under age 1.
