Rhoades Is Anxious and Lucid Hours Before Planned Execution

More details have been released concerning the final hours of Paul Ezra Rhoades, scheduled to die by lethal injection at 8 a.m. Friday.

According to Jeff Ray, public information officer for the Idaho Department of Correction, Rhoades' health condition is "fair" and he has been "anxious and lucid."

Rhoades' last meal will be hot dogs, sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, onions, relish, baked beans, veggie sticks, ranch dressing, fruit with gelatin, and strawberry ice cream. It will be offered by 7 p.m. today. Another light snack of cheese and crackers will be offered no later than 3 a.m.

Rhoades' family members will be able to visit with him until 8:30 this evening. He will be allowed to make phone calls until 9 p.m. His attorney, Oliver Loewy, and a spiritual adviser will be with Rhoades until 6 a.m.

Rhoades' mother has chosen to witness her son's execution. Also witnessing the lethal injection will be representatives from all three of the victims' families. Rhoades' body will be cremated and his remains will be given to his attorney.

Rhoades received a card, signed by all but one of the death row inmates at the Idaho Maximum Security Institute.
