Atheists Spread Holiday Cheer to Charity

Posted By on Sat, Dec 10, 2011 at 9:04 AM

During the holiday season, much is made of charitable giving through the auspices of faith-based organizations. But at least one charity, Doctors Without Borders, recently enjoyed its largest one-day fundraiser from atheists.

According to Reuters, Doctors Without Borders usually gets about 4,000 hits on its U.S. website. But last Sunday, that number ballooned to 50,000 as an organized effort from atheists pumped in more than $180,000 in donations. Most of the web traffic was funneled through reddit.com, which usually includes robust debates on creationism. According to Reuters, the atheism subreddit boasts more than 300,000 subscribers.

A spokesman for Doctors Without Borders said the donations were not earmarked for any particular project and could be used for any of the global charity's work, which, this year, included fighting cholera in Haiti and the Congo, as well as responding to emergencies in Libya and Ivory Coast.
