Colbert Buys South Carolina TV Ads But Won't Be On Ballot

Two weighty questions face political pundits this weekend:

1. Can Mitt Romney deliver a knockout punch in next Saturday's South Carolina primary?

2. What to make of the newly-announced exploratory committee supporting the candidacy of Stephen Colbert?

Even though he's not on next week's ballot, Colbert has bought $7,600 in ad time on a Charleston, S.C., television station, quickly followed by another $10,000 ad buy from his political action committee—Definitely Not Coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super PAC.

But the ad buys are for naught. The deadline for registering for the South Carolina primary was last November, and the state doesn't allow write-in candidates. Colbert has very few options left, except Texas, which is allowing candidate registration until February 1 in preparation of an April primary. By the way, independents and Democrats can vote in Texas' GOP primary. Plus, delegates are distributed proportionally.

Colbert talks about this candidacy on Sunday morning's This Week with George Stephanopoulos on ABC.
