Would Romney Be the Richest President Ever?

Posted By on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Put presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's millions next to the richest-of-the-rich Americans and his estimated wealth of $190 to $250 million pales in comparison, but his net worth could make him one of the wealthiest U.S. presidents in history. In fact, according to the Associated Press, you can "add up the wealth of the last eight presidents, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama, double that number and then you're in Romney territory."

Adjusted for inflation, Romney would probably be among the top five richest presidents in American history, topped by George Washington, with nearly 60,000 acres of land, Thomas Jefferson, with his vast plantation, Herbert Hoover's millions from mining and John F. Kennedy's family fortune.

Romney's wealth is approximately 50 times that of Obama, whose net worth is between $2.2 to $7.5 million.

Of course, Romney is in familiar company when compared to some of the wealthiest lawmakers in the nation's capitol. The richest in Congress include Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas ($294 million), Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California ($220 million) and Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts ($193 million).

Idaho's junior Sen. Jim Risch ranked 16 of Roll Call's annual 50 Richest Members of Congress list last August. According to Roll Call, Risch's net worth was $19.78 million.
