No Poop For You; Poop Fairy Campaign to Fly Into Boise This Spring

No, Boise. There is no poop fairy.

That's the message that will, no doubt, garner plenty of attention this spring when the Boise Parks and Recreation Department and the Foothills Conservation Advisory Committee launch a unique campaign to encourage Boiseans to clean up their pets' poop.

"We heard about this campaign from Jefferson County, Colo.," Parks and Rec spokeswoman Amy Stahl told Citydesk. "And it really grabbed a lot of national attention when [MSNBC's] Rachel Maddow picked it up."

"Picked it up" was just one of the unintentional double entendres during Citydesk's conversation with Stahl.

"This would be a new, fresh approach," said Stahl. "Whoops, it's a hard thing to talk about without making a joke."

But in fact, Parks and Rec likes the idea of using a tongue-in-cheek approach to get the message out.

"We're working with a local artist to present an illustration for the campaign," said Stahl. "We're hoping to begin some public outreach this spring. We're looking to talk more seriously about the water-quality implications from dog waste. It's all part of a bigger picture."

According to the the Jefferson County website:

"Like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, the fabled poop fairy has been the stuff of legend. Flying undetected in parks, neighborhoods and schoolyards, she was said to follow close behind dogs and their owners — picking up what the dog left behind, before flying off to the next canine creation. A widespread belief that she existed seemed to reassure some that cleaning up after one’s dog was sort of … optional."
