Caffeine Inhaler to Be Scrutinized by FDA

On Dec. 28, 2011, BW and GlobalPost first told you about something called AeroShot, an caffeine inhaler that was about to be launched in the United States after becoming a popular club drug in European.

The inhaler is sold over the counter to anyone, regardless of age, and is also marketed online.

The inhaler is plastic, about the size of a tube of lipstick and according to the manufacturer is "filled with a powerful mix of caffeine, B vitamins and citrus flavors."

But the Food and Drug Administration announced today that it will investigate whether the manufacturer was right to brand the inhaler as a dietary supplement when it first went on the market in Massachusetts and New York.

"We need to make sure that Aeroshot does not become the next Four Loko by facilitating dangerous levels of drinking among teenagers and college students," said Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer, who has been leading the opposition to the inhaler being openly marketed.
