On Eve of Hot Coffee Film, McDonald's Serves Up Free Piping Cups of Joe

Maybe Treasure Valley McDonald's franchise owners know that the film Hot Coffee is playing at Boise's Egyptian Theatre Thursday night, but, then again, maybe not.

Local owners announced today that they're giving away small cups of their premium roast coffee for free through March 5, one to a customer and no purchase necessary.

In what may be the biggest irony of the week, the Hot Coffee documentary about the infamous lawsuit in which an elderly woman successfully sued McDonald's over severe burns from hot coffee, will be shown for free Thursday night.

BW recently previewed the film (BW, News, Feb. 15, "Some Don't Like It Hot"), which examines the McDonald's hot coffee incident and the many myths that have brewed since the landmark 1994 ruling.

"I think when people come into the theater, they probably think the McDonald's case was a pretty ridiculous, frivolous lawsuit," said film director Susan Saladoff. "And then they see the photographs. It's almost as if a switch is flipped in people's brains. And when it switches, it becomes, 'Oh my, how did I not know this? How did I get this so wrong?'"

The free screening is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Egyptian.
